Durham County Council Planning Application Process
Individuals, communities and interest groups can comment on any planning application received by Durham County Council. The level and extent of consultation and publicity will vary depending on the size, scale, location and nature of the proposed development. However, all planning proposals have the potential to raise issues and be sensitive. Publicity and consultation is therefore an integral part of the planning process.
Proposed developments are publicised in three ways – local newspapers, site notices posted in the areas affected and individual letters to residents living in the area. Anyone wishing to comment normally has 21 days from the date of the press or site notice or consultation letter to respond.
Comments must be submitted in writing but can be sent by letter or via the Durham County Council website. Comments received are taken into account when planning decisions are made.
